The fifth generation of the L series small block V8s will make 455PS at 6000rpm and 630Nm of torque at 4600rpm making it the most powerful standard engine that the Corvette has ever had. If that doesn’t sound exclusive enough for you, you could opt for the performance exhaust system that will push that figure up to 460PS.
With a specific output of 75PS per litre the LT1 has a better relative output than the race derived 7.0 LS7 engine from the C6 Z06 and peak torque is just 7Nm short of torque figure from the bigger engine. This is achieved with a combination of a number of technologies like continuously variable valve timing, direct fuel injection and active fuel management to name a few.
The direct injection helps with a more efficient burn of fuel by precisely controlling the spray of fuel and at the same time allowing for a cooler combustion chamber. Active fuel management will now cut half of the cylinders of the V8 when the engine is being driven sedately further helping in the efficiency. “The 2014 Corvette Stingray’s LT1 engine is a triumph of advanced technology, delivering more power and torque than ever before with greater efficiency,” said Jordan Lee, Small Block chief engineer.
The 2014 Corvette Stingray coupe, featuring the 6.2L LT1 engine will go on sale this September with a convertible following shortly at the end of the year.
